Affiliate marketing. These two words often inspire more confusion than excitement among marketers—but why? Much of it boils down to this: although many marketers know of affiliate marketing, they don’t know how to use this tactic to drive digital marketing success. End your confusion and boost your ROI today by following these three steps to affiliate marketing prowess.

Define your brand and audience
You can’t know which influencers to target unless you know your audience. What does your brand stand for? Who are your current customers in terms of age, education, gender and lifestyle, and which customers would love your product or service but haven’t discovered your brand yet? If you don’t know these answers, you won’t be able to succeed at affiliate marketing. But on the flipside, if you can nail down your brand values and your key customer groups, then you’ve already got the foundation of a winning affiliate strategy.

Find the right publishers
Once you’ve defined your brand and customer segments, it’s time to search out the influencers they are engaging with online. Remember, when we say “influencers,” we don’t just mean bloggers; we’re also talking about popular YouTube channels, social media influencers, coupon publishers, media outlets, nonprofits and foundations, celebrities and more — basically, anyone or any group with a large, engaged community online.

Establish accountability
Once you approach these influencers, remember to get on the same page. After all, if they are promoting your product or services online, they are essentially tied to your brand in the eye of their community. Set guidelines with your affiliates on what can, and cannot, be said in regard to your brand, and determine the ideal cadence and style for their promotions. If they offer a discount for your product, set a limit. And above all else, closely monitor your affiliate behavior for two things: their proper representation of your brand and its values, and their quantifiable contribution to your sales. You can satisfy the second part by utilizing software that tracks affiliate activity and ensures you only pay commission for purchases that are actually generated from your affiliate.
