It takes a lot of time, effort and a sizeable marketing budget to acquire new customers; and it makes a great deal of sense to focus on retaining the existing ones by providing excellent customer service.

While it may seem like an uphill task, it isn’t really that difficult to keep customers happy. However, not many companies are able to get this aspect right. Here are some ways in which small businesses can deliver excellent customer service:

Take every opportunity to engage with your customers
It’s important that you make your customers feel respected and valued. They want to be assured that the company/business they are dealing with will provide them value for money and deliver on their promises. This is why you should:
• Communicate regularly with all your customers to understand what their changing needs are
• Conduct regular surveys for customer feedback; this will help you get a more honest assessment of what they perceive of your business
• Monitor the wider economy, & analyze what impact the changes will have on your customers
• Track your competitors; this will help you understand exactly where you stand in the market and how you can actually differentiate yourself from the competition
• Offer your clients flexibility; this will ensure they get exactly what they they’re looking for

If you don’t give customers what they want, there isn’t any point in conducting surveys and listening to them. While it’s important that your employees work within a framework, there has to be a certain amount of flexibility and they should be empowered to provide custom solutions as and when appropriate.

Make sure you hire the right people and in addition to qualification and skills, your staff members should also be dedicated and committed to providing the highest levels of customer service to your customers.

The right attitude
Look for people with the right attitude; it’s much simpler to train them and they will also typically be the ones that won’t let you down. Mentor, train and provide opportunities of growth to your staff. This will keep them motivated to do better at their job, which in turn will improve the levels of customer service they provide.

In the current day business climate, where competition levels are very high and customers are becoming increasingly demanding, you have to make extra efforts to provide higher level of customer service to every customer that walks in through your door.
