Social Entrepreneurs - What Do They Do?

Everyone needs to work for a living and earn themselves a comfortable life. Successful business owners often invest their time, skills, money, and effort to establish a venture and ensure it grows and reaches new heights. They come up with innovative products and services that help people and fill a vacuum in the market.

However, there are some entrepreneurs that work for more than profit and growth. They work to resolve world problems like poverty, hunger, environmental pollution, etc. These business owners are called social entrepreneurs.

What Do Social Entrepreneurs Do?
Social entrepreneurs provide solutions to large scale social, economic, cultural, and environmental problems. Instead of leaving that job to government organizations, charities, and other such institutes, they form their own establishment and invest time and effort to ensure their solutions reach the right people and individuals who need help. Here are some achievements of social entrepreneurs:

  • They provide key solutions for a problem that’s affordable, relatively easy to implement, and sustainable.
  • Their first focus is on the social, environmental, and cultural benefit of their products and services. The financial benefits are considered afterwards to ensure they have enough revenue to keep working on their cause.
  • Social entrepreneurs also refine and improve their products and services based on feedback and opinions from experts. They also tend to encourage others in their industry to contribute in a meaningful way and get assistance from others.
  • These entrepreneurs are creative and dedicated so they don’t give up when they encounter hurdles. Social entrepreneurship has more obstacles in its way than conventional entrepreneurship because investors and employees want to earn some money; and profit usually isn’t the goal of social entrepreneurs.

Types of Social Enterprises
There are different types of social enterprises based on the manner in which they operate and these include:

  • Leveraged Non-Profit – This establishment will leverage revenue from different sources to finance solutions, products, and aid and they operate on a relatively traditional model.
  • Hybrid Non-Profit – This establishment is more willing to earn profit in order to support their activities and ensure their solutions are affordable and easier to implement.
  • Social Business Venture – These establishments are sometimes for profit and have a business-like structure. They operate through social means using tools like the Internet and mass media.

The world needs socially responsible individuals with the means and determination to help. If all entrepreneurs contribute in some way towards a social cause, we’ll find solutions to the problems more quickly and would be able to help more people.
