Launching a business is an emotional roller coaster for any entrepreneur. It’s easy to fluctuate wildly between having no money, tons of money, your product working perfectly, and everything seeming broken. The ups and the down can be exhausting and even damaging to your emotional and personal health.

That being said, they don’t have to be. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your focus, even when all seems lost:

1. Default to Positivity
When you encounter an obstacle, it’s easy to let yourself slip into a self-deprecating mindset “Why do bad things always happen to me?” you might ask yourself. But, allowing yourself to dwell on those thoughts is guaranteed to shake your focus from where it should be: righting the ship. It’s impossible to lead effectively a self-deprecating position. The solution is not to stop thinking, but rather inhabit a more positive and forward-thinking mindset. This positivity will help shift your focus away from each challenge, and to the opportunity it presents. You have a choice in determining how you evaluate your life and your business. Choose to stay positive! situation and where you place your focus.
  • Pick Your Head Up, Literally
The best way to push down negativity and maintain focus is to think about how you carry yourself. Take a moment to picture someone who’s had a bad day. You know the look: downcast eye, shoulders slumped, slow pace. Fight that tendency. Keeping your head up, shoulders back, and pace up can help not only to make you feel better, but also to project your confidence and positivity to the rest of your team. Negativity is contagious, and the last thing you want is your team feeling down with you. So, if you are down and having a tough day, get up and move around. Get out of your funk. Take a walk outside. Moving around will help reset your mindset and keep you sharp.
  • Resist Unhealthy Patterns
Odds are, you let yourself run on auto-pilot: allowing your emotional state to drive your inner dialogue. Next time you run into a problem, STOP! Take yourself off of auto-pilot, pay attention, evaluate the situation, and if you feel yourself headed toward negativity, disrupt that pattern. This will help you look at the situation in a whole new light. With enough practice, this powerful way of thinking will become automatic.
