What is Product Market Fit and How Can You Determine It?

Most start-ups are familiar with the concept of product-market fit; but understanding the concept and successfully implementing it are two different things. This concept has helped many businesses launch successfully in their target market and convince their prospective customers that their product is worthwhile. Here’s a brief explanation of the concept and some suggestions on the matter.

What is Product-Market Fit?
The term was coined by Marc Andreesen, the co-founder of Netscape and according to him, “Product-market fit means being in a good market with a product that can satisfy that market.”
Your product should fit the market you’re about to introduce it into, and fulfill the needs of your customers in the most comprehensive manner possible. That sounds simple enough but it’s a little more complicated than that. For example, if you create an accounting program for small business owners that’s comprehensive, has sophisticated tools and features, but is very difficult for a normal business person to use, your product just wouldn’t be an accurate product-market fit.

How Can You Determine Product Market Fit?
There are many different ways in which you can determine product-market fit and they’re relatively easy to do. It might take a little time, effort, and expense, but the end result is worth it.

  • Create a Survey – The easiest way to determine product-market fit is to ask your prospective customers about their opinions. You should create a comprehensive survey with a specific set of questions regarding your product and the prospective customers’ preferences. You need to get at least 100 responses to gain concrete data.
  • Research Your Target Demographic – You can also research your target demographic and analyze big data about your industry. This would give you a more comprehensive picture of the market and your potential customers.
  • Ask Help from a Professional – It can be difficult and time consuming to study all the data and figure out the product-market fit. A professional analyst would be able to see patterns, point out details, and help you understand the information. They’ll also make recommendations on how to alter your product and make it more suitable for the market.

If you nail the product-market fit, your business would be off to a good start and your chances of success would increase. Marketers and business analysts often call this the Golden Rule for start-ups so you need to consider it seriously before you launch your business.
